Plot Twist

Watch out! Harry Potter has some new enemies. Some people want the young wizard out of public libraries. They say the Harry Potter series is not good for kids, because it mentions witchcraft and violent parts.
Harry isn’t the only character on trial. Other commonly targeted titles include Bridge to Terabithia, The adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and The Scary Stories series.
People in favor of banning certain books say kind need to be protected from reading material that is not appropriate. But others say it’s important for kids to read about different ideas and point of view.
Should public libraries ban certain books? Student reporters Essence Duvall and Hannah Nett each plotted out a side.
Yes
“Libraries should be safe places for children,” says Nancy Heady, a school librarian from Kentucky. “Books such as the Twilight series, with curse words and vampires, are ‘too violent’,” she says.
The wrong book can teach kids that it’s OK to do whatever they like to whomever they choose. A scary book can cause nightmares. Books like those should be banned.
Video games and movies have ratings to warn parents about violence and cursing. If banning books causes too many issues, why can’t books come with ratings? Why are you allowed to read violent books but not allowed to watch R-rated films?
Banning books or better informing parents about certain books is necessary to keep kids safe.
No
I believe it is the people’s choice what they read. Everyone has different points of views, and people should respect those.
If parents don’t approve of a certain book, they can forbid their children to read it. But they don’t have the right to make that decision for other families. Besides, removing one book could mean many other books end up mean many other books end up being removed.
“These books should be left on the shelves,” says Pamela Martin, a school librarian from Mississippi. “They allow children to view different aspects of life… without being forced to change their own beliefs.”
