Each of these statements is false. Mapman tells you why.

1. Antarctica is not a desert
Antarctica is what geographers call a “cold desert.” It is the world’s largest desert in terms of land area. It covers about 5.5 million square miles, roughly 2 million square miles more than the Sahara, the world’s largest “hot desert.”
南极洲不是沙漠
地理学家们把南极洲称为“冷沙漠”。它是世界上最大的沙漠,占地550万平方英里,粗略估计,比世界上最大的“热沙漠”撒哈拉还要大200万平方英里。


2. Oceania is a continent
Oceania is a vast region that includes several thousand islands in the northern, central, and southern Pacific Ocean. Australia (which is a continent as well as a country) and New Zealand are considered part of Oceania.

3. Central America is where Kansas is.
Central America is the southernmost part of North America. A narrow strip of land, it connects the continents of North America and South America. The central region of the U. S. is known as the Midwest.

5. Mount Everest is the world’s tallest mountain.
When measured above sea level. Mount Everest is the highest (29,035 ft). it is not the tallest, however, when measured from base to top. That distinction goes to Hawaii’s Mauna Kea, which rises 33,476 feet from the floor of the Pacific Ocean.

The North Pole, the northern end of the Earth’s axis of rotation, is a point in the Arctic Ocean.

7. Rivers never flow in a northerly direction.
Most of the world’s rivers flow in a southerly direction. However, when a river’s source is located south of its mouth, that river will flow to the north. Egypt’s Nile River is the most famous example of a river that runs in a northerly direction.

8. Puerto Rico is a country.
Puerto Rico is neither a state nor a country. It is a U. S. territory with commonwealth status.

9. The U. S. is the world’s fattest country.
Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) released its list of the “10 fattest countries” of the last decade. The U. S. came in third behind the nation of Kiribati and American Samoa.

10. The world has only four oceans.
In the spring of 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization declared the Southern Ocean the world’s fifth ocean. The Southern Ocean extends northward from the coast of Antarctica to 60°S.
